The Research and Advocacy Unit (RAU) expresses its concern with the arrest and detention of staff of the Counselling Services Unit (CSU). CSU provides an invaluable service to victims of trauma, and, as such, any disruption to its activities must be seen as interfering with the operations of a humanitarian organisation. RAU therefore calls for the immediate release of those detained, and urges the state to proceed by way of summons.
Following the harassment of the Director of the Human Rights NGO Forum, Abel Chikomo; the arrest, detention, and harassment of members of the Gays and Lesbians Association of Zimbabwe (GALZ); and the continued persecution of members of the Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA), this recent incident suggests very strongly a campaign by the Inclusive Government against the non-governmental sector.
RAU calls upon the regional governments, as guarantors of the Inclusive Government and the international community at large, to apply all possible pressure on the Inclusive Government, to release those detained and to desist from interfering with the work of civil society organisations in pursuance of a free and democratic society.
